About Demerol

What is Demerol?
DemerolDemerol is a narcotic analgesic used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Take Demerol by mouth with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. Because Demerol is more effective for preventing pain than treating once it occurs, this is usually taken regularly for a short time. Use Demerol exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because Demerol can be habit-forming.

How should I take Demerol?
Do not crush the tablets before taking, as this could release the drug into the bloodstream too fast, possibly resulting in an overdose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you are within an hour or so of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your schedule. Taking double doses of Demerol is not recommended, as it may lead to an overdose or dependence.

Possible side effects from Demerol
If you experience any of the following serious side effects from Demerol, stop taking Demerol and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); slow, weak breathing; seizures; cold, clammy skin; severe weakness or dizziness; or unconsciousness. Do not stop taking Demerol suddenly without first talking to your doctor if you have been taking it continuously for more than 5 to 7 days. Your doctor may want to gradually reduce the dose.

Cautions when taking Demerol
Use Demerol with caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Demerol may cause drowsiness. If you experience drowsiness, avoid these activities. Avoid alcohol while taking Demerol. Alcohol may increase the drowsiness and dizziness caused by Demerol and could be dangerous.

What happens if I overdose with Demerol?
If you suspect an overdose with Demerol, seek medical treatment immediately. Demerol overdose is characterized by seizure, slowed breathing, extreme drowsiness progressing to stupor or coma, limp muscles, or cold, clammy skin. Severe Demerol overdose may result in death due to cardiac arrest or stopped breathing.
