Nexium (Esomeprazole) a gastric acid pump inhibitor and an anti-ulcer agent.
Indications
Nexium (Esomeprazole) is used for the treatment of ulcers and for the treatment of too much acidity in the stomach. Nexium (Esomeprazole) is also indicated for the treatment of duodenal ulcers and GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease).
Nexium (Esomeprazole) and its active ingredient works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Warnings
Allergic reactions may likely happen to patients who are susceptible to allergies especially on the components of this drug.
Nexium (Esomeprazole) has not been studied on pregnant women however, it has been tested on animals and there were no birth defects recorded on the studies done in animals. The active component of Nexium (Esomeprazole) which is Esomeprazole is not also known to be passed into the breast milk however, before deciding to breast feed your baby while on Nexium (Esomeprazole) medication, you should first discuss this with your doctor.
You should also inform your doctor or use Nexium (Esomeprazole) with caution if you have liver disease or any liver malfunctions as it may cause Esomeprazole to build up in the body.
When taking Nexium (Esomeprazole) , it is important that you set yourself up for regular tests to check if your condition has improved or not. If your ulcer or stomach acidity problems have not abated after a considerable amount of treatment, ask your doctor for proper advice.
Intake Guidelines
Nexium (Esomeprazole) should be taken an hour before meals and it is important that you should not chew or break the tablet. It is to be swallowed whole. If you cannot swallow the tablet/capsule whole, you may sprinkle its contents into a teaspoon of apple sauce and immediately consume it. You can also combine the granules of Nexium (Esomeprazole) into water and this is again to be consumed immediately.
Dosage
The Dosage of Nexium (Esomeprazole) may vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of the disorder and other medical factors to be considered. The dosage can only be effectively prescribed by a doctor or physician. However, suggested doses are as follows:
- 20-40 mg for adults and to be taken once daily for the prevention of GERD
- 20 mg for adults for the treatment of GERD
- 40 mg once daily for adults in the treatment of ulcers (with antibiotics)
Overdose
When symptoms of overdose are suspected, immediately seek medical care and attention.
Missed Dose
It is not advised to take double doses of this medicine even if you miss a dose. The best thing to do when a dose is missed is to skip the missed dose entirely especially if it is near the time for the next dose. You can only take the missed dose if there is an ample gap of time prior to the next scheduled dose.
Side Effects
The side effects associated with Nexium (Esomeprazole) intake are only temporary and may just be caused by your body's adjustment to the treatment. Among these side effects are:
- Headache
- Abdominal Upsets
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Dryness of mouth
Drug Reactions
There are no known medicines that can adversely affect the composition and the reactions of Nexium (Esomeprazole) in the body. However, it is a good practice if you inform your doctor of the medicines you are taking. May they be herbal medicines, over the counter drugs, prescription drugs to treat other illnesses and the like.
